SQL fluency, then embedded SQL done properly: host variables, cursors, SQLCODE discipline, and the precompile-bind pipeline demystified.
Cohort / corporate first self-paced release follows recording
Every session ends in a lab on your own environment. Labs are machine-checked against expected outputs — you and your L&D team always know exactly where you stand.
Databases, tablespaces, tables, indexes, views; the catalog; SPUFI as your workbench.
LAB First SPUFI session.
SELECT, WHERE, ORDER BY, joins, GROUP BY, subqueries; INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE; NULLs without superstition.
LAB Graded SQL drills — the counter runs to 60+.
DECLARE TABLE, host variables, the SQLCA, and the SQLCODE checking discipline; NULL indicators.
LAB A COBOL program reading with a cursor.
DECLARE, OPEN, FETCH, CLOSE; positioned UPDATE and DELETE.
LAB Cursor-driven maintenance program.
Precompile, compile, BIND; plans and packages; what a -805 means and how not to meet one.
LAB Run the full pipeline yourself.
Commit scope, locking levels, reading a deadlock, and a first look at EXPLAIN.
LAB A staged lock-contention scenario. Capstone: batch posting program with restart logic.
Your seat is a private, full z/OS-compatible environment with a DB2-class SQL engine and SPUFI in the browser — nothing to install, snapshot and reset per exercise. By the end of the course the lab harness will have verified: at least 60 SQL exercises and a cursor-driven COBOL program per student.
